FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What are the school hours?
School office hours: 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Instruction for grades TK-5: 8:00 a.m. – 2:28 p.m.
Every Tuesday school will dismiss at 1:28 p.m.
2. Why does school get out at 1:28 on Tuesdays?
School is dismissed at 1:28 on Tuesdays to allow teachers to participate in banked time professional development. This gives them the opportunity to work with one another to improve classroom instruction and educator effectiveness. Teachers bank their planning time minutes and use them to participate in professional development.
3. When are parent-teacher conferences?
Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled twice a year, usually at the end of the Fall and Winter trimester reporting periods (November and March).
4. Will my child go on field trips?
Thanks to our FAB fundraising, all students will go on at least two field trips that require bus transportation each year. Teachers will schedule these trips to support their curricular program. click here for the Field Trip Permission form.
5. How does Fairburn celebrate birthdays?
Each teacher will provide parents with guidelines for celebrating birthdays in their own classroom. You will receive information at our back-to-school day. Please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher for more information.
6. What are my options for school drop-off each morning?
If you are walking to school there is a drop-off entrance on Ohio Avenue. If you would like to walk your child to the exercise yard, use the Rochester Avenue entrance, and you may also stay for a few minutes in a designated area adjacent to the Multipurpose Room to watch morning exercise. 7. What should I do if my child is late to school?
Enter through the front of the school (Fairburn Avenue entrance) and take your child to the main office to check in. Your child will then be escorted or sent to his/her classroom.
8. What should I do when my child is absent from school?
Sick children should not be sent to school. When your child returns to school after an absence, please send a note to his/her teacher explaining the absence.
9. What should I do if I have to take my child to an appointment during the school day?
If possible, please schedule appointments for your child after school. If that is not possible, please make sure your child comes to school in the morning so they get credit for their attendance, and then you may pick them up when you need to in order to attend the appointment.
If you need to pick up your child from school during the school day, please come to the front office via the Fairburn Avenue entrance and request your child from the office staff. You will be asked to present identification and to fill out a blue slip. Your child will be called to come to the office to meet you.
10. Is there a Lost and Found on campus?
Lost and Found is located outside the auditorium. Parents are encouraged to check periodically for missing items. Items that are unclaimed are donated to a charity every few months.
11. How are classroom assignments made?
At the end of each school year, the teachers at each grade level meet to create classes for the coming year. We aim to create balanced classes so key factors we consider in class placement are gender, ethnicity, English language proficiency, academic ability, gifted/talented identification, behavior and social interaction. All student assignment decisions are made with the best interests of our children in mind. In order to find the environment that is right for each child, the faculty, staff and administration work together to create the class assignments. We believe that our teachers, certificated employees and administrators are best positioned to determine the composition of our classrooms. While we understand that parents want to assist in determining the ideal environment for their child, we believe that the best decisions are reached by trusting the expertise of our faculty, staff and administration. This allows us to meet the needs of individual students while also doing what is best for our school as a whole. The decision to place a child in the classroom of a particular teacher is not made based on parent requests or preferences.
12. Will my child receive report cards?
LAUSD progress reports are provided to parents three times a year at the end of each trimester. If your child is in danger of receiving a mark of two or below (not meeting the standards) you should receive a six-week warning notice from the teacher.
13. Can I visit my child’s classroom?
The visitor policy at all LAUSD schools provides opportunities for visits to classrooms. You must call first to schedule a visit with the school principal. Once scheduled, you must follow the guidelines outlined in our School Visitor Policy, which is available in the school office.
